The Scampering Squirrel

The Scampering Squirrel

Appearing suddenly
from the shadows
beneath the hedge,
it scurries in short
erratic bursts;
every nerve seeming
to twitch at some
unseen threat as
it crosses the lawn
to swoop on a
discarded tit-bit.

Clutching it tightly,
it quickly scans about,
still fearful of discovery,
before darting off,
scampering up a tree,
and racing along an
overhanging branch.
It sits, content, secure,
examining its prize
and clearly buoyed
by its own daring.
