#TenderTuesday . . . Happy were the days

Happy Were The Days

Happy the age and harmless were the days
For then true love and amity was found
When every village did a maypole raise
And whitsun ale and may games did abound
But all the lusty yonkers in a rout
With merry lasses danced the rod about
Then friends did to their banquets bid the guests
And poor men fared the better for their feast
The lords of castles, towns, and towers
Rejoiced when they beheld the farmers’ flourish
And would come down to the country bowers
To see country gallants dance the morris
But since the summer poles were overthrown
And all good sports and merriments decayed
How times and men are changed, so well is known
It were but labours lost if more were saved.
