In past centuries, women that were suspected of being witches were thrown into water.
If they drowned, they were presumed innocent. If the water rejected them, they could be
condemned for witchcraft.

  1. This cruel lunacy was backed up by leading academics and theologians. They saw it as “logical.” Sociologically, a so-called witch’s lands and property could be seized by the state. Hence widows were at risk of being victimized by these amoral madmen.
