Today is the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi; the Soul of modern India and Apostle of non-violent resistance and tolerance! We join our friends all over the world who draw inspiration from this great soul in celebrating his life and times!
The Sage Gandhi! Deep in spiritual insight, he cautioned against blindly implementing the often quoted Law “an eye for an eye”! According to him, a literal observance will only achieve a negative effect! His words:
“An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”
An astute statesman and philosopher who however shunned any form of personality cult and grandiose propagation of his thoughts! With uncommon humility he told his followers:
“There is no such thing as “Gandhism”, and I do not want to leave any sect after me. I do not claim to have originated any new principle or doctrine. I have simply tried in my own way to apply the eternal truths to our daily life and problems…The opinions I have formed and the conclusions I have arrived at are not final. I may change them tomorrow. I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and non-violence are as old as the hills.”
Gandhi’s birthday and principles got a boost when on 15 June, 2007 the United Nations declared October 2nd the International Day of Non- Violence!
The General Assembly resolution asks all members of the UN system to commemorate 2nd October in “an appropriate manner and disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness.”
So, dear friends, even if you do not celebrate Gandhi, you should at least, pause to reflect on the evils and victims of violence; to reflect on how violence is harming every aspect of our lives; be it physical, psychological, cultural, religious, political or, otherwise!
Above all, let us all, like Mahatma Gandhi resolve not to perpetrate, aid or abet violence in any form and under any guise!
Happy GANDHI JAYANTI to our friends in India!
We are blessed to have been gifted so inspiring a man. Thank You for sharing this lovely reminder!

How wonderful a man…he has trials and his failures…but he did not let that stop him from continuing his quest for non-violence…he began with himself, as we all must do…Thank you for the wonderful sharing! I grew up in the countryside, in a two street town in Wisconsin…population 59…and his words reached me! How blessed I am!

A note on Gravatars…I have tried viewing the blogs of some of the blogs you have listed on your sidebar. And when I get to the Gravatar, I am not able to find the link to their sites…Previously, I learned that one had to manually link the gravatar to one’s blog…this may be the issue…or, it may be I am not doing something accurately to reach the other bloggers. Do you know the answer? Thanks!

The problem is usually experienced with blogs whose owners have not supplied enough contact info/blog links in their Gravatar profiles. The fault is with the blog/Gravatar owners not you the visitor! Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!
